Jens Kyllönen, a professional poker player from Finland, was stunned when laptop , which had been stolen from his hotel room while he was playing in a tournament, mysteriously returned to the same place he left it.
Jens complained about the incident to the hotel, but the staff wasn't much help. They told him the camera wasn't working properly, so they weren't able to find out how it happened.
Interestingly, the laptop was stolen again while he was asking for help from the staff and was placed in the hotel lobby. Whoever had access to laptop managed to remove the password.
Then, he thought about visiting F-Secure Labs to have them do a digital investigation on his laptop to find out what happened.
According to F-Secure Labs, the laptop was actually infected with a Java-based remote administration tool (RAT). Based on the timestamps, the malware was introduced to the laptop when it was lost.
This is not the only person who fell victim to this attack, there is another professional player, Henri Jaakkola who stayed in the same room at the event and had the exact same trojan installed on their laptop.
Those who have a laptop with sensitive information should place it in a safe place when they are not with it, and the drives should be encrypted.
