Tech giant Samsunghas introduced a new chip to make this possible.
Usually, when a new high-end smartphone comes to market, you can be pretty sure that the manufacturer will offer a 128GB version. The iPhone 6 has such a development and so will the Galaxy S6.
The problem is that phone models like these are quite expensive and not everyone is willing to pay to have the extra storage capacity built in.
As for the cheapest mobile phones, they usually go up to 32GB. But that may change in the near future.
The company has spotted an opportunity so that you can soon buy an affordable phone with 128GB of internal memory. It wants to implement new high-performance mobile memory based on eMMC 5.0 technology in wallet-friendly mobile devices.
Its 128GB 3-bit NAND-based chip is primarily aimed at the mid-range mobile market, so the average tablet and smartphone will benefit from it.
Devices like the Galaxy S6 are now using the more advanced and faster Universal Flash Storage standard UFS 2.0, so the time is right for eMMC 5.0 to make its way to more affordable devices.
The new 128GB chip can achieve sequential data read speeds of up to 260 MB/s. As for read and write operations, it can support up to 6,000 IOPS and 5,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second), respectively.
Samsung believes this is enough for advanced multi-tasking and high-definition video editing features.
One important aspect that the company failed to mention in its press release is when mass production of the chip will begin and when we can expect to see it integrated into mobile phones.
Once the new technology starts rolling out to OEMs around the world, we can expect to see the first affordable smartphones with 128GB of internal storage.
We also shouldn't be surprised if Samsung ends up putting the technology in some of its own smartphones and tablets.
