Tag Heuer is ready to take on the Apple, and is set to unveil the new device sometime today.
The Swiss company has said it is working on a smartwatch shortly after Cupertino announced its own last year. According to Reuters, Tag Heuer's parent company LVMH has teamed up with Intel to create a digital version of one of its most iconic models: the original black Carrera. The new watch will reportedly still look like its non-digital counterpart, but will be able to track geolocation, distance walked, and altitude.
Pocket-lint reports that Google has been helped to create the fancy gadget, but the Mountain View company has not confirmed this information. However, in an interview with the company in January, CEO Jean-Claude Biver admitted that only the watch itself will be made in Switzerland. The chips, apps and other parts that make it digital will be manufactured in Silicon Valley.
While we still don't know if Cupertino's wearable will impact luxury watchmaker sales (it's not even available yet), Biver had only competitive words to say during his recent interview with Reuters: "Apple will get the young people who are used to wearing a watch," he told the news agency, "and later on they might want to buy a real watch themselves."
More details about Tag Heuer's entry into the smartwatch industry are expected later, hopefully including pricing and availability so that interested customers can make an informed decision before the Apple Watch is released.
