Following user reports on Apple's site, Gizmodo conducted tests to confirm whether or not the iPhone 5s' motion sensors are experiencing a calibration problem.
By comparing an iPhone 5s to an iPhone 5 in combination with real tools that the iPhone "mimics" with the appropriate sensors, Gizmodo discovered that the gyroscope, digital compass, and accelerometer on two different iPhone 5s do indeed show incorrect readings.
In its own tests, the website ArsTechnica confirmed Gizmodo's findings, as you can see in the photo with the iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, although placed on a flat surface, only the iPhone 5s shows an incorrect measurement.
Additionally, based on the discussion taking place on the MacRumors forum, many users report incorrect readings of up to 6 degrees, while in the measurements of ArsTechnica and Gizmodo the measurements were incorrect by 2 degrees despite repeated calibration attempts. In the same discussion, users report that they proceeded to change the device, with Apple not objecting, and the problem does not occur on new devices.
Apart from the incorrect readings on the iPhone 5s' digital compass, the consequences of the problem in normal use of the device are minor, as reported by ArsTechnica, while Gizmodo publishes a video of a game with the problem visible.
So far, Apple has not made any announcement regarding the issue to clarify whether this particular issue is a hardware or software problem, as well as how the company intends to address it.
