Landmark Admin says data breach affects 800,000 people

Insurance management company Landmark Admin is warning that a data breach is affecting over 800,000 people from a cyberattack in May.

Landmark Admin is a third-party administrator for insurance companies, offering back-office services such as processing new businesses and managing claims for large insurance carriers.

Some insurance companies that work with Landmark Admin include American Monumental Life Insurance Company, Pellerin Life Insurance Company, American Benefit Life Insurance Company, Liberty Bankers Life Insurance Company, Continental Mutual Insurance Company and Capitol Life Insurance Company.

In a filing with the Attorney General's office, Landmark Admin says it discovered the breach on May 13, 2024, prompting the company to shut down its IT systems and remote access to its network to prevent the attack from spreading.

Landmark worked with a third-party cybersecurity firm to remediate the incident and investigate whether any data during the attack.

During this investigation, Landmark says it found evidence that the hacker accessed certain files during the attack that contained the personal information of 806,519 people.

Landmark Admin says the investigation is ongoing and will inform the individuals affected by the breach when more information becomes available.

Due to the sensitive nature of the stolen data, affected individuals should monitor their credit reports and bank accounts for suspicious activity.

At present, no threat actor has claimed responsibility for the attack, so it is unknown whether this is ransomware or a data theft attack.
