ROG phones from Asus have always been aimed at gamers, but with the ROG Phone 8, the company seems to be looking to find a broader appeal for its lineup. The new models are now thinner (8.9mm vs. 10.49mm for the ROG Phone 7), lighter (225g vs. 239g), offer better dust and water resistance (IP68 vs. IP54), and support wireless charging up to 15W – features that are desirable regardless of whether you're a mobile.

The ROG Phone 8 series includes the base ROG Phone 8, the ROG Phone 8 Pro, and the ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition, which differ slightly in design and features. The ROG Phone 8, priced at $1,099.99 (€1,099.99 / £949.99), features an RGB logo on the back and comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The ROG Phone 8 Pro, priced at $1,199.99 (€1,199.99 / £1,099.99), features 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, while the ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition, priced at $1,499.99 (€1,499.99 / £1,299.99), features 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Both of the more expensive models feature LED dot-matrix displays on their backs.
The main draw, though, is gaming performance. The phones feature a cooling system that uses boron nitride and copper to absorb heat from the Snapdragon processor and dissipate it through the back of the phone. Asus claims its approach is 20 percent more thermally efficient this time around. But if you're looking for more cooling, there's a new version of the AeroActive Cooler that you can attach to the back of the phone and claim to reduce the temperature of the back cover by up to 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit).

Since it’s 2024, there are of course some AI-powered features included. “AI Grabber” is a feature that makes it easier to search online for game guides by recognizing and copying in-game text. Asus also says it’s using AI for improved search results in the phone’s apps , like the launcher, Gallery, and settings. Additionally, there’s an “AI Wallpaper ” feature that’s in development that will create custom wallpapers using Stable Diffusion.
All three models are powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, with a 5,500mAh battery that supports up to 65W fast charging. On the front, there's a 6.78-inch OLED display with a 165Hz refresh rate, up to 2,500 nits of brightness, and a small hole that houses a 32-megapixel front camera. On the back, there's a triple camera setup with 50-megapixel sensors, 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle, and 32-megapixel telephoto with 3x optical zoom.

Asus' ROG phones will never be the recommended choice for non-gamers, but with the ROG Phone 8, they might feel less like a compromise for a gamer torn between a gaming-focused smartphone and a more traditional flagship. It's expected to launch in the UK and Europe in February, with US availability to be announced at a later date.
