On its most recent flyby of Jupiter , NASA's Juno spacecraft came very close to the planet's volcanic moon, Io
Passing within about 1,500 kilometers of Io, the most volcanic body in our solar system, Juno was able to capture amazingly detailed images of the moon. The only time a spacecraft has come closer to Io was in 2001, when Galileo passed 181 kilometers above the south pole of Jupiter's moon.
Juno launched in 2011 and arrived at Jupiter and its moon system in 2016. However, on Saturday, December 30, 2023, it snapped some stunning new photos of the moon Io, to end the year in the most exciting way possible. Some are in black and white, while others are in color. However, the purpose of the close flyby wasn't just to snap a few pictures, but also to collect important data about Io and volcanic surface.

Scientists are combining the new data with previous ones to study how Io's volcanoes vary. "We're looking at how often they erupt, how bright and hot they are, how the shape of the lava flow changes, and how Io's activity is linked to the flow of charged particles in Jupiter's magnetosphere," one of the scientists.
NASA shared some of the incredible images on its X account. There's a black-and-white image taken at an altitude of about 2,500 kilometers, as well as other color images.
Io is considered the most volcanic body in the solar system as a result of the immense gravity of Jupiter, our most massive planet, plus the gravitational influence of the other large moons of the Jovian system— Europa, Ganymede , and Callisto.
Together, the moons and Jupiter pull and push on Io, creating tidal forces. These tidal forces are so enormous that they cause Io's surface to bend strongly enough that it can rise and fall to extremes of up to 100 meters. As a result, the moon is covered in hundreds of active volcanoes that spew lava up to tens of miles above Io.

Some of these particles escape the moon's thin, waterless atmosphere and are trapped by Jupiter's magnetic fields, forming a hot plasma around the planet. This shows how much Io can affect Jupiter and the entire moon system. That's why NASA considers its study important and is collecting data.
The Juno spacecraft will again approach the volcanic surface of this moon on February 2. It will later make further flybys. After the final approach to Io, Juno will reach the end of its extended mission in September 2025. At that time, the spacecraft will intentionally crash into Jupiter's atmosphere, completing its 9-year study.

The new images can help the scientific community in many ways. First, they can provide information about geological activity on Io. This can help scientists's internal structure and evolution.
