Instagram: New feature lets you share feed posts only with 'Close Friends'

Instagram has faced a lot of complaints from users about the anonymous nature of the social network, as its algorithmic feed plays a major role in it. The company is trying to open up more ways for users to share content with their friends. To that end, Instagram is now testing a feature that allows you to share feed posts only to your “Close Friends” group.

In the past few days, many users, including Lia Haberman from the ICYMI newsletter , have discovered this feature . The company confirmed to TechCrunch that it is testing this feature in some countries, but did not say which ones exactly.

" We're testing the ability for people in select countries to share feed posts with their close friends. We're always exploring new ways for our community to express themselves and connect on Instagram ," a Meta spokesperson said .

If the ability to share feed posts with friends becomes widely available, it could reduce the need for users to have a “finsta” account (aka an alternative friends-only account).

In 2018, the social network globally launched a Stories sharing feature with a private list of “Close Friends.” The previous year, the company sought to delve deeper into the idea of group chats with “Close Friends” on Instagram through an app called Threads (no, that’s not the social network that launched in July). However, Threads, the group chat app, was shut down in 2021 to focus on improving the direct messaging experience.

Last December, Instagram launched Notes, a new feature for sharing text updates with our friends. This option provides us with an easy and quick way to share our thoughts and updates with our loved ones. In recent months, the company has added new features to Notes, such as music sharing, translation, and location sharing. These updates are aimed at improving the quality and ease of use of the app.
