Users who have updated to iOS 16 should see the Photos app automatically detect any duplicate photos and videos in users' libraries and place them in a Duplicates album for review, giving users the ability to merge duplicates and delete unnecessary ones.

In a new support document, Apple clarified that for the Duplicates album to appear, your iPhone must first index your photo library and find duplicates, but this detection process requires iPhone to be locked and plugged in.

"Depending on the tasks running in the background and the size of your photo library, the process may happen quickly or take up to a few days to complete," Apple adds.

Please note that if you don't have any duplicates in your library, then the Duplicates album won't appear in the "Utilities" section of the Photos app until you do.
