Now you have a way to show your disapproval of harmful (or simply pointless) TikTok comments. After a test this spring, TikTok launched the global rollout of the «dislike» comment button. As with other social media, you can press a button with your thumb down to express your displeasure or undo the action if you had second thoughts.

The company is pitching the feature as another way to get feedback on “irrelevant or inappropriate” comments. Ideally, a comment with a high number of dislikes would alert TikTok to hate speech, spam , or trolling that it otherwise wouldn’t have detected. This, in turn, could promote healthier comment sections.

Before you ask: yes, TikTok is aware of the potential for abuse. Like YouTube , TikTok will not display the number of dislikes. A mob may have less incentive to downvote comments they disagree with . TikTok has not said whether it will crack down on abuse of the button, but the company has been asked for clarification

This isn’t the only moderation tool TikTok has at its disposal, and the combined resources could help the company better manage its comment sections. With that in mind, it’s unclear how effective the “dislike” button might be given TikTok’s challenges enforcing its policies. TikTok still has issues with controlling misinformation , for example. Dislikes can help, but they don’t represent a surefire solution.
