The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – Amazon Prime record

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has set a viewership record on Amazon Prime Video while the company filters out troll reviews.

The two-episode premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power attracted 25 million viewers worldwide in 24 hours , making it the biggest debut in Amazon Prime Video history , the company said in a press release. “It’s somehow fitting that Tolkien ’s stories — among the most popular of all time and what many consider to be where the fantasy genre truly was born — have led us to this proud moment,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios .

There was a lot to do for The Rings of Power , with a $465 million budget for the first season and stiff competition from HBO's rival series House of Dragons . The latter also recently debuted to the highest ratings in HBO history with 9.986 million viewers across HBO and the streaming HBO Max platforms .

Amazon also took the unusual step of delaying reviews for The Rings of Power by 72 hours to filter out trolls, Variety. It appeared to have been “bombarded with reviews” on sites like Rotten Tomatoes, where it received a 37 percent user rating but an 84 percent rating from critics. The series faced trolling for its decision to cast actors of color as elves, dwarves, and other characters.

Amazon Prime Video plans to rate every review to determine whether it’s real or created by a bot or troll. Amazon first introduced the practice when the baseball series A League of Their Own debuted on August 12.The strategy seems to have worked, with the latter earning a 4.3 out of 5-star rating on Prime Video, compared to a 94% Rotten Tomatoes review rating (however, this also lines up with the 85% audience rating on RT).
