Workers to employers: Do you want us to go back to the office? Pay us more

Workers say their employers should pay them more to work from the office as energy, fuel and transportation prices have skyrocketed.

According to new research from Citrix, 74% of employees believe their company should compensate them for rising fuel costs, while 45% believe their salaries should increase to cover these expenses.

The survey of 500 office workers in the US found that 92% of workers are concerned about rising commuting costs – employees want their employers to step in and help them. More than half (57%) of employees want to work from home more often to save on commuting costs.

More than one in three workers would consider quitting their job if their employer didn't offer flexibility in where and how they work, Citrix found: 38% of workers would leave their employer or start looking for a new job if it meant they would have the freedom to work remotely, while 23% said they would change jobs if a prospective employer offered a more favorable work arrangement than their current company.

Traci Palmer, Vice President of Human Resources and Organizational Capabilities at Citrix, said: “Workers have learned that they can work from home and be just as productive, and as fuel continue to rise, they are questioning whether the benefits of the office outweigh the costs.”

Unfortunately for some workers, the big return to the office is already underway. Of the 500 employees surveyed by Citrix, 41% said they were returning because their employer.

More than a quarter of employees have had to give up their remote work privileges entirely: 26% of respondents said they are in the office five days a week. 19% will work from the office 3-4 days a week, and 17% will only go once or twice a week.

Now for those who haven't returned, 53% said it was because they enjoyed the flexibility of working from home, while 51% said remote work helped them balance work with their personal lives , and 39% said remote work saved them time and money .

Employers who revert to pre-pandemic work policies centered around the office risk disgruntling employees who are accustomed to the flexibility of working from home.
