Glen D. VanHerck, commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, was discussing the latest results of the Global Information Domination Experiment, also known as GIDE, a so-called multi-command event involving representatives from all 11 combatant commands in the U.S. Department of Defense.
The Pentagon hasn't released many specific details about what exactly GIDE entails. Rather, the idea appears to combine data with machine learning and other forms of artificial intelligence (AI) to gain enough informational advantage to enable the proactive approach VanHerck describes.
If the AI detects some interesting changes in that parking lot, it can send an alert suggesting someone take a close look at satellite imagery of the area for suspicious activity.
VanHerck emphasized that the system does not involve new technology, but rather a new approach to using technology to process bundles of information.

VanHerck adds that the result could be days of advanced warning.
Regarding concerns that this scenario may start to look scary, VanHerck made it a point to reiterate that "people are still making all the decisions.".
