According to Google, the latest Chrome update, version M99 , has set a record on Apple 's Speedometer web benchmark and is faster on Mac devices than Safari . A post on the Chromium blog details the improvements made to Chrome's speed over the past year or so, in JavaScript compilation and graphics rendering.

According to Google, all of this results in its browser being the fastest on an M1 Mac, about 7 percent faster than Safari. Chrome M99 set a speed record with a score of 300 on a benchmark created by WebKit , according to a blog post. The Speedometer benchmark is designed to simulate what it's like to use a web app running on a variety of technologies to see how responsive the experience is.
Google notes that it conducted its testing on a 14-inch MacBook Pro with a 10-core M1 Max chip and 64GB of RAM.

Performance is a big deal when it comes to general web browsing, as no one wants to wait when using a web application. However, speed has never been a particular issue for Chrome, as much as resource consumption. While Chrome isn't entirely to blame for its high RAM usage (all those scripts running so quickly take up space and resources on their own, and it can actually be difficult to measure system resource usage), it does have a reputation for being a memory hog.
Of course, those who use both Chrome and Safari won't notice any significant speed differences between the two. There's also a lot more than just speed to consider. For example, there are complaints that Chrome is "a complete disaster" when it comes to battery life on the M1 MacBook Air.

But on the other hand, if you are completely happy with the features that Chrome has and it doesn't seem to make your computer sluggish, you can use it without fear.
