Nearly a quarter (23%) of companies worldwide have been the victim of seven or more cyber attacks in the past year. According to Trend Micro, companies believe that breaches and attacks will increase over the next 12 months.
The security firm commissioned the Ponemon Institute to calculate its semi-annual Cyber Risk Index (CRI), which measures the gap between organizations' current security posture and their likelihood of falling victim to an attack .

This edition also contains information from Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions, offering insight into areas that are not usually studied.
Approximately 83% of respondents claimed that cyber attacks on networks or IT systems in the next year are “somewhat” or “very” likely.
The CRI is based on a numerical scale from -10 to 10, with -10 representing the highest level of risk. The current global index is -0.41, representing “increased” risk. In the U.S., the risk index is -1.07.
The organizations that responded to the survey claimed that the top cyber risks worldwide are: phishing, social engineering, clickjacking, ransomware , fileless attacks , botnets and man-in-the-middle attacks . Businesses also said they are particularly concerned about the loss of customer data , IP and financial information, the subsequent loss of customers and the theft or destruction of their equipment.
The top security risks in IT infrastructure, according to respondents, were: organizational complexity, careless insiders, cloud infrastructure and providers, lack of appropriate skills, and malicious insiders.
Trend Micro communications director Jon Clay described the CRI as a useful tool for organizations looking to better understand their security risks and posture .
“It will help organizations around the world find better ways to reduce complexity, mitigate threats , and improve cloud security to minimize risks,” Clay argued.
