The No More Ransom Project is celebrating its fourth year of operation , preventing $632 million worth of ransom payments and helping more than 4.2 million visitors recover from a ransomware attack .
No More Ransom was created in 2016 by an alliance between Europol's European Crime Centre, the Dutch National High-Tech Crime Unit and McAfee. The aim of this collaborative project is to combat ransomware attacks and provide free services decryption to victims.
Today, the project has 163 partners worldwide.
At least 632 million dollars have been saved
Over the past four years, the No More Ransom Project estimates that it has helped millions of users and prevented $632 million worth of ransom payments, with the help of all the partners and decryption tools released.
Specifically, this money has been saved thanks to the availability of at least 110 decryption tools, created by law enforcement, academia, and private partners. The tools have been used by over 4.2 million victimized users .
The amount of money saved is likely much higher, as some sites use tools , but the No More Ransom Project cannot control the use of the tools on these sites.
Furthermore, since most applications do not include telemetry, they may have been used much more than we know.
Tools without telemetry include those created by Emsisoft, which has released the most tools (54).
