Recently, Instagram users reported noticing something strange in the app. Specifically, they were seeing a green “camera on” when using Instagram and scrolling through their feeds, but without taking any photos or videos. An Instagram spokesperson said that this was due to a bug, which the company has already fixed. The “Create Mode” is accessible from Instagram’s camera, which could disable the camera indicator. The Instagram spokesperson emphasized that the company only has access to users’ cameras with their consent. He also added that the company identified and fixed the bug in the iOS 14 beta that showed that users were using the camera, when in fact this was not the case. Instagram, however, in these cases, does not access users’ cameras and does not record any material and content.
This Instagram behavior appears to be another of the notifications iOS 14 users are receiving, warning them about app behaviors like clipboard copying. Several iOS apps, including TikTok, LinkedIn , and Reddit, have been discovered to be accessing users' clipboard content, with a notification appearing whenever a third-party app accesses the clipboard of an iOS 14 device.
TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, said earlier this year that it would be cutting off access to device clipboards. The company also said in June that it had updated the App Store to remove the feature, which it described as an “anti-spam” measure. The company also noted that the feature was never implemented on Android devices. At the same time, LinkedIn announced that it had stopped the practice of clipboard-copying, while Reddit said it was fixing a piece of code that caused the behavior in its app. Finally, Facebook, which owns Instagram, fixed a bug in its iOS app in 2019 that enabled cameras without users’ knowledge.
