With fingerprint scanners having entered the smartphone space for some time now, Fujitsu has gone a step further, announcing that it has developed an iris recognition system, which it has integrated into a prototype smartphone.
Simply by looking at the smartphone screen, the user's iris is scanned and the phone is unlocked.
The company claims that this system has a clear advantage over passwords or fingerprints, as it is difficult to forge and convenient to use. The screen is unlocked with the look, which means that the user's hands are free in any case.
Beyond its use for smartphone security, iris recognition could also be used to log in to online services without requiring an ID or password, allowing for easier and more secure access.

Essentially, what the company did was to shrink and improve the current iris recognition technology (which stops changing after the age of two, and is unique to each person), so that it could be integrated into smartphones.
The system "reads" the eye with infrared LED light, taking a photo to store its shape, which is then used for comparison/confirmation.
The two key parts of the system are a special, high-performance LED, and a special infrared camera, combined with camera control and biometric identification technologies that have been in development for years.
Regarding its range, the distance required is the normal distance a user keeps when using their mobile phone - that is, it is not required to bring the eye closer than 10 centimeters. It is noted that, based on tests that have been carried out, infrared LED light is harmless to the eyes.
