Security researcher Mark Burnett seems to have outdone himself. He published 10 million usernames and passwords from around the world, claiming it's an effort to help improve research.
The usernames and passwords he leaked, he has been collecting over the years. All are in plain text format, which means a lot of work has gone into decrypting them.
Burnett used scripts to acquire 11,000 passwords per day from the Web, forums, and IRC. It took more than ten years to gather roughly six million passwords.
The remaining passwords come from the numerous 2009 breaches that allowed Burnett to obtain 20 million unique passwords in one year.
“All the data is or was at some point available in uncracked form” says the researcher in a large FAQ he created specifically for the release of the sensitive data.
