Record number of events in Greece to introduce children to the art of programming

paidia programmatismos

The number of events organized during the week of October 11-17, 2014 in Greece, as part of the European Code Week, is rapidly increasing.

The EU has issued a relevant invitation since the end of June 2014.

The number of events for introducing children, even preschoolers, elementary schoolers, middle schoolers, and high schoolers, to the art of programming is so high (and continues to grow) that it brings us third in the ranking of 38 countries, after Ireland and France, with 195, so far, events around us, out of a total of 1500 across Europe!

On October 14, 2014, we are expected to learn more from the EU "about a new online platform that will support the project, at the initiative of the industry", if it is not the already well-known code.org platform, which is already being used in Greece.

These events are organized by eager teachers and professors who have long been involved in developing the relevant skills of their students, as you can see by browsing their websites. In Rhodes, children in the 5th and 6th grades of Primary School in the city's 1st Primary School will play, without the use of a computer, algorithmic thinking games in their schoolyard and will compete in programming using the rich material of code.org (with integrated educational material, tools and a student management system for teachers). At Domokos General High School, they will play with the lingua franca of the Internet, HTML, and will experiment with Arduino boards. At the Michaniona High School in Kyzikos in Thermaikos, children will work with AppInventor to develop their first app, at the High School in Sofades in Volos, Scratch 2 will be on fire, where there will be a presentation of applications that 16-year-old children have already developed, as well as in Thermi, at the 12th Primary School of Kallithea and elsewhere. Children in the 3rd Primary School in Anthokipi Efkarpia will make Markos search for treasures, at theIntegration Department at the 30th Primary School of Athens they will shout "programming is for everyone", at Byronas 15-year-old children will utilize the experience they gained from the Hour of Code last year, at the headquarters of CoderDojo on Sunday there will be a presentation of the Turing Machine...

The list continues with extremely interesting events and we encourage you to find the most interesting ones to participate in with your children and share your experience with us! Happy coding!

The number of events is not the only indication that children in Greece show a particular interest in programming, since we also have distinctions to show at a global level. For example, the last major distinction for National Informatics Team came from the International Olympiad in Informatics held in Taipei, Taiwan, between 13-20 July 2014. From the event, the Greek team won two bronze medals from two high school students (Dimitrios Los and Aristophanes Rontogiannis). The Greek delegation also included the young programmers Giorgos Venizelos and Giorgos Christoglou (high school) and Theodoros Kokkoris, Kyriakos Stefanidis, Christos Karatheodoros and Stavros Filosidis, high school students. The event is under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, as it has been for 27 years, with the organizer being the Hellenic Society of Scientists & Professionals in Information Technology & Communications (ESPC). In its long history in these events, Greece has won 51 medals, 19 of which in the last 4 years.
