A new report from Alcatel-Lucent shows that most malware transmitted over mobile Internet connections ultimately end up on desktops and laptops, despite the fact that most users use Android devices.
By analyzing traffic data from 100 million devices connected to mobile networks running Motive Security Guardian software, researchers at Alcatel-Lucent's security research center, Motive Security Lab, were able to gain a comprehensive picture of how malware infections affected their customers during the first half of 2015.
The main finding of the report is that, even though most people use their mobile phones to connect to the internet, 80% of malware infections occurred on Windows computers connected via tethered phones, dongles or mobile WiFi hotspots.
One possible explanation is that the malware, from its inception, was created specifically to target Windows-based computer systems, and even though it has already been six years since Android was released, there are still very few malware families targeting the popular operating system, despite the fact that it is installed on more than 1 billion devices.
Even more interesting is the fact that the spread of Android malware appears to have halved since the beginning of the year, with the infection rate reaching just 20%, down from 45% previously.
