Social networking site Twitter and US authorities are investigating a series of online threats by alleged Islamic State jihadists against the social networking site, its co-founder and company employees, according to media reports.
Supporters of the Islamic State have called for attacks on Twitter Inc. and its "interests" in online posts, while there are also threats against the lives of people such as Twitter Jack Dorsey, according to Buzzfeed, which first reported on the issue, as well as the American network NBC. "Your virtual war against us will cause a real war against you," the online threats from supporters of the Islamic State said, according to Buzzfeed.
The reason for the threats is the closure of Twitter for those who post or publish gruesome content, such as hostage executions. "We told you from the beginning that this is not your war, but you did not take it seriously and continue to close our Twitter accounts, but we always come back," the supporters of the Islamic State state in their threats.
"Our security team is investigating the accuracy of these threats with appropriate law enforcement agencies," Twitter Inc. said in a statement late Sunday, according to CNBC and Buzzfeed.
The Islamic State jihadists have largely relied on Twitter and other social media for their communication propaganda, such as shocking videos of the beheadings of hostages and other violent acts against their enemies.
But companies that control social media, such as Twitter, have removed the content of these images and suspended accounts that post images of executions and other atrocities.
