After the revelations about the NSA, the US intelligence agency seems to be facing a very serious problem for the first time. The agency refused to disclose how much water it uses at its new Bluffdale, Utah, data center because it considers it a national security issue, and this has probably bothered a lot of people.
Arstechnica reported that a new ruling issued by the State Records Committee of the city of Bluffdale gives the agency less than a month to provide municipal authorities with data related to the water consumption of the NSA data center in Utah.
The data center already consumes huge amounts of energy and water. It is estimated that it needs more than 4,500 cubic meters per day.
The NSA wants to keep the actual water consumption figures secret, stating that by calculating water usage, one could determine the computing power and capabilities of the Data Center in Utah.
“Armed with this information, one could deduce how much intelligence NSA is collecting and maintaining,” said NSA Deputy Director David Sherman.
