Epic wants to allow Fortnite skins to be transferred to other games

Epic Games has never hidden its ambition to create a fully interconnected digital ecosystem, where players can carry their digital identity across games. While the vision of the metaverse remains more of a promise than a reality, the company believes that the upcoming Unreal Engine 6 could be the technological foundation that will turn this idea into a working product.

Epic

During the State of Unreal, Epic revealed that the new version of the popular game development engine will allow creators to integrate Fortnite skins that players have already purchased into their. At the same time, developers will be able to create their own items and appearances, which will be compatible with the Fortnite ecosystem.

Interoperability at the heart of the new strategy

Epic's core idea is based on the concept of interoperability. Instead of each game operating as an isolated ecosystem, the company envisions an environment where digital items gain value beyond the boundaries of a single title.

In practice, a player who has purchased a favorite skin in Fortnite could use it in other games developed with Unreal Engine 6 and supporting the new technology. This approach attempts to address one of the biggest user complaints about modern online experiences: the fact that digital purchases remain locked within a single game.

For millions of gamers who have invested significant sums in digital items, the ability to transfer them across multiple environments could fundamentally change the way they perceive the value of in-game purchases.

The great challenge of adoption

Despite the ambitious announcements, the success of the venture cannot be taken for granted. The new model requires the participation of developers, who will have to invest time and resources to integrate the necessary tools into their games.

The crucial question is whether development studios will be willing to open their platforms to an ecosystem directly linked to Fortnite and Epic Games. For many companies, adopting such a strategy may be seen as indirectly strengthening a competitive ecosystem.

Epic will likely need to create financial and technological incentives in order to convince more creators to invest in the new platform.

The Unreal Engine 6 timeline

Interested developers will need to be patient. Epic is targeting an early release of Unreal Engine 6 towards the end of 2027, with a full release expected around 12 to 18 months later.

This means that it will be several years before there is a mature gaming ecosystem that will leverage the capabilities of the new engine. Creating a truly interconnected metaverse requires not only technological infrastructure but also long-term collaboration between different creators and publishers.

Fortnite remains strong, but not invincible

The announcements come at a time when Fortnite continues to maintain impressive popularity, with around 75 million monthly active users. However, the platform is no longer at the explosive growth levels it experienced in previous years.

The decline in engagement has led Epic to major restructuring and staff cuts, as the company looks for new ways to boost player engagement. As part of that, it's planning more game crossovers and major changes to Fortnite's gameplay, including a new Roblox-style home screen that will showcase different user experiences and creations.

At the same time, the ambitious plan to create a permanent digital universe in collaboration with Disney is still in development, despite the fact that it was announced more than two years ago.

Generative AI enters game development

Another important element of the new strategy concerns the integration of generative AI into the Unreal Engine. Epic revealed that it is already using artificial intelligence to generate visual elements in Fortnite and plans to release an experimental MCP plugin, which will allow developers to connect large language models to their projects.

The technology could significantly speed up the game development process by automating the creation of assets, dialogue, and tools. However, Epic's approach has already sparked backlash, with several creators expressing concerns about the impact of AI on the traditional role of artists and creative professionals in the video game industry.
