OpenAI is preparing new open weight models alongside GPT-5

OpenAI isn't just working on GPT-5. It also appears to be preparing to release new open-weight models, thus honoring its name, "OpenAI.".

As spotted on Platform X, two new open source models — “gpt-oss-20b” and “gpt-oss-120b” — have appeared on HuggingFace, an AI model.

The models are already in HuggingFace ahead of public release . Typically, companies like OpenAI need to share model weights with partner companies as part of the preparation for the official release.

OpenAI appears to have already started distributing open source models to external organizations like HuggingFace. We'll likely see more mentions of these open source models in the coming days as OpenAI prepares for launch.

Based on the above, it seems that OpenAI is taking an important step towards enhancing transparency and collaboration in the artificial intelligence community, returning — at least partially — to its original values as an “open” technology organization.

The release of open weight models such as gpt-oss-20b and gpt-oss-120b suggests that OpenAI may be responding to growing pressure from the scientific community and the market for more transparency, redrawing the boundaries between commercial and research use of artificial intelligence.

If these models eventually become widely available, they could be used:

  • for research and academic study,
  • for the development of alternative AI applications by smaller teams or start-ups,
  • to check and analyze potential risks or biases in the models.

With this move, OpenAI may be trying to balance between the commercial strategy (as with GPT-5) and the “public benefit” approach it had initially promised.
