INTERPOL Operation has arrested eight people in Ivory Coast and Nigeria as part of a crackdown on phishing and romance scams. The operation, dubbed Contender 2.0 , is designed to tackle cybercrime in West Africa.
In one case, authorities uncovered a phishing campaign targeting Swiss citizens that resulted in losses of over $1.4 million. Cybercriminals posed as buyers on small advertising websites and used QR codes to direct victims to websites that mimicked a legitimate payment platform. Victims typed in their personal information, such as their credentials or card numbers, without realizing it was a scam.

The perpetrators also impersonated, by phone, the customer service agents of the alleged platform.
Up to 260 fraud reports were said to have been received by Swiss authorities between August 2023 and April 2024. Thus, an investigation was launched that led to the identification of the campaign in Ivory Coast.
The main suspect behind the phishing and romance scams admitted his guilt and said he earned over $1.9 million. Five other individuals who carried out malicious activities at the same location have also been arrested.

Authorities also identified another case, a romance scam, and arrested a suspect and his accomplice in Nigeria on April 27, 2024. Finnish authorities had notified Nigerian police, through INTERPOL, about a victim who lost a lot of money.
In this type of financial crime, scammers typically create fake online identities on dating apps and social media platforms to develop romantic or intimate relationships with potential victims. Once a relationship is established, they ask the victims for money.
“Taking advantage of the increased reliance on technology, cybercriminals are using a range of techniques to steal data and perform fraudulent activities,” said Neal Jetton.
