Ford: The car industry almost withdrew from Australia

Ford CEO Jim Farley claims the automaker has "almost pulled out " of Australia.

The withdrawal from the Australian market is due to stricter emissions standards, as well as financial problems. The turmoil increased after Holden announced it would withdraw in 2020. The Ford Ranger was named the most popular vehicle in Australia in 2023. Despite the relocation of production to other countries, Ford still maintains design activities in the country, although it reduced its staff last year.

Last year, among other measures, Ford cut about 400 of its 1,800 local employees , with the largest reductions in product development and design, as part of a global effort to improve efficiency and adapt its operations to meet future needs.

Ford has said Australia will remain a development hub for the Ranger and Everest, but there is no guarantee the company will maintain its presence in the market. General Motors' decision to scrap Holden has sparked a backlash. New emissions standards will force manufacturers to adapt, with demand for electric and low-emission cars expected to rise, but Australians are questioning the promise of $1000 a year in savings from these new standards, as they do not take into account additional costs such as depreciation and insurance. Demand for SUVs could fall due to the new emissions standards.

According to Ms King, there will be no impact on car prices due to the new policies. In contrast, FCAI chief executive Tony Weber argues that the impact on consumers will be significant. The government has refused to publish the data, claiming it is confidential information. This has sparked a backlash from car industry representatives, some of whom are warning of possible price increases.
