The director of Avowed has revealed a few more details about Obsidian's upcoming RPG and confirmed that its combat system will be improved when it launches on Xbox Series X|S and PC later this year.

Carrie Patel, director of Avowed, spoke about upcoming RPG , confirming that Obsidian is working on improving the combat system, that there will be multiple endings, and more.

After last month's Xbox Developer Direct, we said that Avowed looked great but the combat felt like it was missing something. During an appearance on the Dropped Frames, Patel spoke about the community's response to Avowed's combat. "One of the really encouraging things was seeing fans point out some of the things that we're actively working on," Patel said. "Like the feel of hitting and affecting enemies while attacking."

Patel says the material presented last month was “a few weeks behind where we were even when that material was given,” and asks players to “trust us, we’re working on it.”

Additionally, Patel talked a bit more about the game's combat, revealing that Avowed will feature multiple versions of enemies, many of which can affect the player character by knocking them down or using unblockable attacks, encouraging you to switch weapon sets frequently.

Elsewhere in the interview, Patel talked about character customization. While the skill point system is classless, Patel says that character creation will affect some of the gameplay mechanics and aspects of the role. The game's many companions have very archetypal themes, from what it sounds like.

A recent deep dive with Xbox Wire revealed that Avowed is made up of “open zones,” and for that reason, Obsidian won’t be adding horses to the game. Certain combat abilities and various pieces of gear will grant you movement bonuses.

While Patel didn't discuss endings on the Dropped Frames podcast, a recent interview with IGN revealed that there will be multiple endings, saying, "I mean, it's an Obsidian game. What else could it be if we didn't have a few different endings?" How many potential endings are still unclear, but it looks like we'll have a lot of choices to make in our adventure.

“You have to approach it with a degree of variety, both in the spread and placement of those consequences and the nature of those consequences,” Patel said. “Some things have to have surprising but believable outcomes. If everything goes exactly as you expect, it can feel a little boring. And at the same time, not every mission has to have world-threatening consequences. Some of them are off-limits and have huge ramifications for the characters and the world around you, but sometimes the story you’re experiencing is just a very deeply personal one for the characters involved. And that’s okay.”
