Problems with YouTube ad blocking are simply a bug in Adblock Plus.
9to5Google spotted users on Reddit experiencing poor loading performance with ad blockers enabled.
A video at the top of the Reddit shows what some users are seeing: A video with an ad enabled can't load fast enough to keep up with the playback speed (which isn't at the normal level, maybe 2x) and has to pause at around 30 seconds. Disabling the dedicated ad blocker immediately improves loading performance, with the white bar in YouTube's progress bar showing significantly more space to load.

Users report that the detection of the dedicated ad blocker causes strange problems, such as "crashes" that make full screen or comments non-functional, or Chrome unable to load other web pages while YouTube is open.
YouTube has used various tactics to get users to disable proprietary ad blockers and sign up for YouTube Premium. In the past, the company has displayed pop-up messages saying that proprietary ad blockers violate YouTube’s terms of service. Previously, the company added a five-second delay to the initial page load for proprietary ad blocker users. These changes have started a cat-and-mouse game between Google/YouTube and the proprietary ad blocker community.

But slowdowns can be a big issue for ad blockers that modify YouTube's code: Adblock Plus has published a bug report covering "performance issues" introduced by version 3.22 and says things should be fixed in version 3.22.1. uBlock OriginRaymond Hill says the problem is limited to Adblock Plus and its derivatives and that YouTube's accusation is "a misdiagnosis."
Regardless of whether this is due to the updated Adblock code, this is not the first time something like this has happened with YouTube.
