New 3D scans of the Titanic wreck have been released, showing the entire ship in greater detail for the first time
The Titanic, the famous ship whose story has been made into a movie, hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage and ended up at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean in April 1912. The fatal hit led to the deaths of more than 1,500 passengers and crew members .After all these years, the story of the Titanic still fascinates us, and many experts try to visit the wreck site to learn more. Now, researchers have a better picture of the entire ship on the seabed, thanks to the creation of a digital scan of the wreck from hundreds of thousands of photographs.

Deep-sea mapping company Magellan Limitedcarried out the work in the summer of 2022 in conjunction with Atlantic Productions, a production company making a documentary about the process of creating the 3D model of the Titanic. Researchers from both organizations spent six weeks at the wreck site, using submarines, to capture over 715,000 images. These images were then stitched together to create a three-dimensional (3D), digital replica of the sunken ship.
“We used two state-of-the-art submarines called Romeo and Juliet, which were operating simultaneously,” said Magellan’s 3D imaging specialist Gerhard Seiffert, about the work on the Titanic. “What we created is a highly accurate photorealistic 3D model of the wreck. Previously, footage only allowed you to see a small area of the wreck at a time. This model will allow people to zoom in and look at the entire ship for the first time.”

When researchers finished scanning the ship, they had 16 terabytes of data and 4K video of the wreck in their hands. Months of processing led to the final 3D model of the sunken Titanic, videos and stills released by Atlantic and Magellan. The model captures the entire ship, but also shows smaller details such as the boilers, etc. This new 3D model could help both historians and engineers learn more about the conditions that led to the Titanic's sinking.
“We have real data that engineers can take to examine the real cause behind the breakup and sinking and thus come even closer to the true story of the Titanic disaster. For the next generation of Titanic exploration, research and analysis, this is the beginning of a new chapter,” said expert Parks Stephenson.
