Former domestic worker sues Jeff Bezos for racial discrimination

A former housekeeper for Jeff Bezos is suing the Amazon founder, saying he discriminates against her because she was often forced to climb out of the laundry room window just to use the toilet because she was not allowed to enter the main house unless she was cleaning.

Mercedes Wedaa, a three-year veteran housekeeper at Jeff Bezos' Seattle , has filed a lawsuit in state court, claiming that Hispanic staff are treated differently compared to white employees.

The former housekeeper claims Bezos mistreated her, but was cordial with the white guards.

Bezos' lawyer denied all allegations and said it would be absurd to claim that Wedaa was discriminated against because of her race.

Wedaa, who first started working at Bezos' home in 2019, said that if Bezos and his family were "residing," then she had to work for 10-14 hours without breaks for lunch or rest.

The lawsuit states that there was no space designated as a break room or rest area and that Wedaa and the rest of the staff ate their meals in the laundry room.

In addition, Wedaa stated that she could not enter Bezos' home except to clean, which made it difficult to use the toilet and caused health problems.

"For approximately 18 months, in order to use the bathroom, plaintiff and other housekeepers were forced to climb out of the laundry room window. Then, run along the walkway to the utility room, through the utility room, and into the bathroom," the lawsuit, first reported by Geekwire, states

The lawsuit claims that because Wedaa and other domestic workers “did not use the toilet for long periods of time,” they often developed urinary tract infections.

Wedaa is suing Bezos and the companies – Zefram and Northwestern – for damages.

Harry Korrell, Bezos' lawyer, said: "We have investigated the allegations and found them to be unfounded. Wedaa was making over six figures a year and was the chief housekeeper."
