YouTube: Makes it easier to convert longer videos into Shorts

YouTube is trying to make it easier for creators to turn their longer videos into Shorts, adding a new “Edit into a Short” tool to its iOS and Android apps. It will let creators select up to 60 seconds of one of their videos and drag the clip into the Shorts editor, right from the YouTube app on iOS or Android. From there, they can add things like text, filters, as well as additional videos shot with the Shorts camera or pulled from photo library .

In an announcement post about the feature, YouTube says that the completed Short will be linked to the full video it was cut from, which could help make Shorts an ideal promotional tool for a creator's longer videos. If a viewer enjoys a Short created with this tool, they won't have to go to the creator's channel and search for the full video.

Unlike other tools like Cut, which lets you use five seconds of a longer video into a Short, or Clips, which can be turned into Shorts, the Edit to Short tool cannot be used on other users'. It will only appear in the Create menu if you are viewing a video you uploaded.

YouTube has been putting a big emphasis on Shorts since it first launched the feature in 2020. As TechCrunch notes, the company has been filling its library by converting existing videos into Shorts, as long as they’re shot vertically and under 60 seconds long. Last month, YouTube said that over 1.5 billion people were watching Shorts each month.

YouTube's post says that the Edit into a Short tool will "let you breathe new life into your classic content," and that access to it is currently rolling out. While it likely won't completely replace more traditional video editing software when it comes to creating Shorts (such as in a case where a creator wants to stitch together multiple clips from the same video), it could encourage creators to see if they have any videos that would work well as a Short.
