Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has pledged to make the country’s domestic flights “green” by 2030. In her New Year’s speech, she said that “by 2025, Danes should have the opportunity to fly green on a domestic route.” She added that “by 2030 at the latest, we should be able to fly completely green when flying domestically in Denmark.” It was part of the politician’s broader commitment to toughen anti-pollution measures and kickstart the country’s green transition.

There are, however, reasons to worry that such an ambitious deadline can be achieved, given the lack of ready-made alternatives. Electric planes may never make it, and hydrogen flights, while much more promising, are not ready to be deployed in a major airline fleet. Not to mention, of course, that only hydrogen produced as a result of electrolysis, powered by excess renewable energy, can be called truly “green.” EnergiWatch said that Denmark’s long-standing policy of waiting for magic technologies to come to fruition is not going to help it meet its international climate emissions.

Of course, Denmark has taken more steps than some countries to help the transition to zero-carbon technologies. The country has already given itself a tough deadline to end oil and gas exploration and is a big player in the wind energy industry. In early 2021, it pledged to build an artificial island that could collect and store energy from Denmark’s wind farms.
