It was a bit of an easy choice, really: In 2021, Tesla's rapid rise in shares propelled Musk to the position of "the richest man in the world" with a stock of $67 billion.

And Musk himself was seemingly everywhere, posting memes, selling his homes for hundreds of millions, moving crypto markets with a few tweets, and selling billions worth of Tesla stock.

"For creating solutions to an existential crisis, for embodying the possibilities and dangers of the age of technology titans, for driving the most daring and disruptive transformations of society, Elon Musk is the Person of the Year for 2021," the magazine explained.

Born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1971, Musk showed potential from a young age, coding a video game at 12 and selling it to a computer magazine for $500. His first big hit came in 1999, when Compaq bought Zip2, the company he founded with his brother Kimbal, for $22 million. Later, the sale of PayPal to eBay netted him $180 million (Musk founded X.com, which merged with Confinity to become PayPal). Even after these successes, Musk never sat idle, investing almost everything he had in SpaceX and Tesla. Today, he heads both companies, and still finds time and energy for other projects like Neuralink and the Boring Company.

Time also published a long interview with the man himself and a fairly comprehensive overview of the good and not-so-good things Musk did this year.
