Spotify: Lack of native HomePod support leads to subscription cancellations

Many Spotify users have become frustrated with the streaming service due to its lack of HomePod support , with many customers reportedly ready to cancel their subscriptions altogether and switch to alternative platforms like Apple Music.

Spotify HomePod

About a year ago, at the Worldwide Developers Conference , Apple announced that it would be adding third-party music service support to the HomePod. A few months later, Apple listed some of the apps that would benefit from the new feature, including Amazon Music, Pandora , and iHeartRadio. Spotify wasn't on that list.

We don't know at this time whether Spotify chose not to be part of the initial batch of third-party music providers with HomePod support or if it was Apple's decision. However, a few weeks later a request was posted on Spotify's community forum , politely asking the streaming service to add support for the HomePod.

Back in June 2020, and more recently, Spotify said it was planning to bring AirPlay 2 support to its iOS app. AirPlay‌ 2 support allows users to listen to their Spotify content through their HomePod, but this is not native HomePod support. Native HomePod support will allow users to use Siri to play Spotify content from their HomePod without opening the app.

Customers are expressing their frustration, with one user writing that Spotify is displaying “childish behavior,” while another said: “this is completely ridiculous – how come they still don’t offer this… how many people have come here, seen this and cancelled. Why does Spotify make support so difficult?”

Unfortunately for Spotify, users aren't just expressing their frustration with words. Many say they've already activated the three-month Apple Music trial and will switch there if Spotify doesn't offer HomePod support before that trial ends. "A month without any information about integration...why pay for Spotify when other services care more about integrations," wrote another user, with many others saying they've already switched to Apple Music.

How many comments does it take to get his attention on this? More than 100 pages? Being a software engineer myself, I understand that such an integration doesn't take THAT long. Come on, it's easy to conclude that Spotify has deliberately decided not to implement it. They haven't even said a simple "yeah, we're on it"“.

Spotify has labeled the idea as a “Live Idea,” but has not provided updates on what stage it is in.

The reasoning behind Spotify's refusal to adopt HomePod support remains unknown. Spotify has previously called Apple "anti-competitive," accusing it of making it difficult for other services to compete with Apple Music.

They don't care about the consumer - I waited a year, nothing happened. I had 6 months of free subscription with my AirPods, so it was time to leave. It's time to play fair there Spotify. You can't complain about not being on HomePod and, when they let you in, not even bother to support it“.

Apple is offering new customers a free three-month trial of Apple Music, which includes native HomePod support. New Apple Music customers who own select AirPods and Beats headphones can use Apple Music for free for six months.
