The XBMC Foundation has announced that the Kodi media center application will be made available to Windows 10 users as a UWP app, adding support for the Xbox One.
Kodi becoming a universal app could only be good news for Windows 10 users, especially since it’s one of the best media center solutions available today. You can download Kodi as a Win32 program, published to the Store built with Project Centennial, but a fully universal app with Xbox One support will provide support for the new operating system.
There is no target date for Kodi's release yet, but it's also worth noting that the upcoming app, although it will be universal, will not support Windows 10 Mobile, but only PCs and game consoles.
Previously known as XMBC Media Center, Kodi can turn a computer into a full-featured media center, and the simple fact that it arrives in the store as a universal app makes it possible to install it on devices where Win32 programs would be limited, such as those powered by the upcoming Windows 10 Cloud.
The official description published in the Windows Store provides more information about the existing version of the media center solution, but there's a good chance that the UWP will offer new features to take advantage of Windows 10 capabilities:
“It uses a 10-foot user interface designed to be a media player for the living room, using a remote control as the primary input device. The GUI lets the user easily browse and view videos, photos, podcasts, and music from a hard drive, optical disc, local network, and the Internet, using just a few buttons.”
