A coordinated attack that took place on Saturday afternoon took down the online editions of major Swedish newspapers for several hours!

This attack was considered very dangerous and serious. The newspapers that were hit by the hackers are Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Expressen, Aftonbladet, Dagens Industri, Sydsvenskan and Helsingborgs Dagblad.
The websites were down on Saturday from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The news was confirmed by the head of the Swedish Media Publishers Association, Jeanette Gustafsdotter, in an interview with the Swedish news agency TT. Gustafsdotter also stated that threatening access to news coverage is a threat to democracy!

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the hacking attack and no details are available. Experts speculate that it was a coordinated DDoS attack against the websites of Swedish media outlets.
Just before the attack, a Twitter account posted the following messages:
“In the coming days, attacks against the Swedish government and the media that spread false propaganda will be targeted.”

This is what happens to anyone who spreads false propaganda!

Swedish police and intelligence agencies are investigating the case. According to various Internet sources, the attacks originated in Russia because of increased online traffic from Russian Internet providers on Saturday. However, Swedish experts said that this does not mean that the attacks were carried out by Russian hackers, but that the perpetrators may simply have used Russian networks.
“Similar attacks have happened before, but they were never coordinated,” cybercrime and security expert Anders Alkvist told Radio Sweden. “And that’s why Saturday’s attack is the biggest cybercrime in Swedish history.”
