Researchers from Johns Hopkins University have developed a prototype drone that can stay in the water as successfully as it stays in the air!

The underwater drone is designed to take off from an underwater station or vehicle (e.g. a submarine) and float to the surface from depths of hundreds of feet. It was created using 3D printing to be lightweight, low-cost and resistant to water pressure, and its key components are sealed in a waterproof chamber. Its external motors have anti-corrosion coatings to protect them from seawater, and the unmanned aerial vehicle can survive up to 2 months underwater according to tests.

Engineers from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory have long been working on both Navy underwater systems and unmanned aerial vehicles, program manager Jason Stipes said in a press release.

The researchers behind the unmanned vehicle don't say exactly where it could be used beyond a wide range of possible missions, but it seems like it would be perfect for conducting reconnaissance.
The prototype drone was named CRACUNS or Corrosion Resistant Aerial Covert Unmanned Nautical System, a name that refers to the Kraken, the mythical sea monster!
