Dutch government websites were hit by a cyberattack, causing them to crash and remain inactive for most of yesterday, while a satirical news website, a Dutch government official announced.
The websites crashed at 11:00 Greek time on Tuesday and the problem was restored after more than seven hours.
The cyberattack affected most of the government's key websites, but phone lines and emergency communication channels were not affected.
Other websites, including GeenStijl.nl, which satirizes politicians and religions, were also taken down.
“Our people are investigating the attack in cooperation with experts from the National Center for Cybersecurity,” said Robert Klusterman, an official at the Government Information Service, which manages the websites.
The cyberattack affected the network of the provider Prolocation, which was unable to immediately provide information.
