The idea of using solar energy has always been exciting, but according to studies, most solar collectors suffer from relatively low efficiency in photovoltaic panels.
On average, most collectors capture less than 20% of the light that hits them. A new study from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, suggests that blue-ray discs could be adapted to capture much more light.
Now, if we melt the blue ray material and transfer it to a polymer solar panel, a series of random nanostructures are created, which have the ability to absorb up to 23% more light. The research was published in the journal Nature Communications and demonstrates, if developed, the further evolution of photovoltaics.
