OpenAI announces new, more efficient GPT-5.5 model

OpenAI has just announced its new GPT-5.5 model, which the company calls “thesmartest and most intuitive model to date. It’s also the next step towards a new way of doing things on a computer.” OpenAI released GPT-5.4 just last month, but it says the new GPT-5.5 “excels” at tasks like writing and debugging code, conducting web research, creating spreadsheets and documents , and performing those tasks across different tools.

“Instead of carefully managing each step, you can give GPT-5.5 a messy, multi-part task and trust it to plan, use tools, check its work, navigate through ambiguity, and keep going,” according to OpenAI. The company also notes that GPT-5.5 will have the “strongest set of safeguards to date” and can use “significantly fewer” tokens to complete tasks in Codex.

GPT -5.5 is rolling out since yesterday to ChatGPT's Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise and Codex, with GPT-5.5 Pro available to Pro, Business and Enterprise.

The presentation of GPT-5.5 by OpenAI confirms that the next generation of Artificial Intelligence is no longer limited to simple task support, but is moving towards the full automation of complex processes. The model's ability to manage ambiguous commands, utilize multiple tools and “think” at a strategic level brings AI assistants closer to a role of a true digital partner. At the same time, the emphasis on efficiency and enhanced security measures shows that OpenAI is attempting to balance power and reliability, an element critical for business applications.

Anthropic recently released Claude Opus 4.7 and also announced Mythos Preview, a non-public model it says is designed to enhance cybersecurity. OpenAI quickly followed suit with GPT-5.4-Cyber, its own model trained to detect security vulnerabilities.

Both companies are competing to dominate the AI coding and business tools market, with OpenAI recently reducing its so-called “side missions” in favor of pursuing larger revenue streams.
