The French police, and in fact its most... "combat" department (National Gendarmerie), has definitively joined the Linux camp.
Gendbuntu, a modified version of Ubuntu, is now running on 37,000 of the service's desktops. Furthermore, by the summer of next year, all of their computers are expected to be running this distribution. That's 72,000 desktops!
What is impressive is the methodicality and long-term planning of the French. Initially, they “accustomed” users to open source software with programs like Firefox, OpenOffice, and Thunderbird in a Windows environment. When users were “ready” they switched 100% to Open Source.
Already, the first studies by the French show a 40% cost reduction with the use of Linux.
