Airbnb is banning the use of indoor security cameras worldwide , the short-term rental platform announced Monday

Previously, Airbnb (ABNB) allowed hosts to have indoor security cameras in common areas, as long as the devices were clearly disclosed on the listing page and placed in visible locations in the home. However, indoor security cameras were never allowed in areas like sleeping areas and bathrooms.
The update announced Monday clarifies that indoor security cameras are now prohibited in any listing, regardless of location, purpose, or prior notification of their existence.
Juniper Downs, head of community policy and partnerships, added that the new policy was created in consultation with guests, hosts, and privacy experts.
The company emphasized that the majority of Airbnb listings currently do not list having a security camera, meaning the policy update should only affect a small subset of hosts.

Hosts who currently have indoor security cameras have until April 30 to remove them. After that date, a host who violates the new policy may face consequences, including account registration or termination on the platform.
Outdoor security cameras, such as doorbell cameras, will continue to be allowed on Airbnb. However, hosts will be required to disclose the presence and general location of any outdoor cameras to guests before they book.
The use of indoor security cameras in Airbnb listings has long been a source of frustration for travelers using the platform. Monday's update also comes about a week after NBC's "Saturday Night Live" aired a skit that made fun of cameras in the bathroom of an Airbnb listing.

Beyond the Airbnb ban, indoor security cameras provide a continuous stream of surveillance, allowing homeowners to monitor activities in their home from anywhere via a smartphone or computer. Additionally, security cameras can act as a deterrent to potential intruders, as their presence can slow down or even prevent a break-in attempt. Security cameras can also help enhance child safety, allowing parents to monitor their children’s progress when they are not home.
