How to manually switch AirPods to another device in iOS 17

Apple has started rolling out the stable version of iOS 17 shortly after the official launch of its latest mobile phone series, the iPhone 15, in September. The latest software from the Cupertino tech giant brings several improvements and new features. With iOS 17, the iPhone maker has also improved the AirPods feature that helps the headphones transition across multiple devices. The company will also allow users to manually switch AirPods between devices.

On the iOS 17 preview page, Apple notes: “Updates to Automatic Switching make switching between Apple devices with AirPods even easier, faster, and more reliable.

The auto-change feature has some device limitations. This means that the feature will only work on select devices. These include:

  • iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and later models
  • AirPods (2nd and 3rd generation)
  • AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation)
  • AirPods Max

However, it’s hard to quantify how much of an improvement the change has made. With iOS 17, Apple to connect a pair of AirPods to an Apple TV 4K. The latest software can also prevent an iPad from picking up AirPods when a user is listening to their iPhone. Apple may have re-enabled the internal algorithms for automatically switching AirPods between devices. However, it hasn’t changed the way users do it manually when they need to. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to manually switch AirPods to another device:

  1. Swipe down to open Control Center on your iPhone.
  1. Tap the icon that appears at the top right side of the music section.
  2. At this point, you will receive the list of available devices. Choose the one you want your AirPods to switch to.

Users should tap the icon within that music section to find the device list. It is also important to note that the music section of the Control Center is quite small. However, it includes three distinct areas where you can tap to get different results.
