Canon is warning users of its large format inkjet printers that Wi-Fi settings stored in the devices’ memory are not properly deleted during the disposal process, allowing third parties to gain access to data .

This bug could pose a security and privacy to affected users if the printer's memory is discovered by repair technicians, temporary users, or future purchasers of the devices, allowing them to obtain the connection details for your Wi-Fi network.
The information stored on a Canon printer varies depending on the model and configuration. It typically includes the following: network SSID, password, network type (WPA3, WEP, etc.), assigned IP address, MAC address, and network profile.
Exposing this sensitive Wi-Fi connection information could make it easier for a malicious third party to gain unauthorized access to a Canon printer user's network. From there, the attacker could access shared resources, steal data, or launch other privacy-violating attacks by exploiting security vulnerabilities
The list of Canon printers affected by this forecast is quite extensive and includes 196 inkjet, professional inkjet and large format printer models from the E, G, GX, iB, iP, MB, MG, MX, PRO, TR, TS and XK series. The supplier has published a special document to help users check if the data retention issue affects their printer models.

Canon recommends that owners of affected printers first clear their Wi-Fi settings before a third party gains access to the printer, which may occur when you repair the device or give it away/sell it to another person.
The security advisory provides the following instructions on clearing Wi-FI settings:
- Reset all settings (Reset settings ‐> Reset all)
- Turn on the wireless LAN
- Reset all settings once again
For models that do not have the “Reset All” function in the settings menu, users are advised to follow these steps:
- Reset LAN settings
- Turn on the wireless LAN
- Reset LAN settings once again
If these instructions do not apply to your printer model, Canon recommends that you refer to the operating instructions that came with your device. Another effective security measure would be to keep printers isolated on networks separate from your valuable data. This way, even if the network is compromised, attackers will not be able to gain access to important devices.
Finally, run any available software updates for your printer model and disable services like cloud printing or remote management interfaces if they are not necessary.
