With the release of a new cross-device software development kit, Google hopes to make it easier to use Android apps on all types of devices.

The search giant announced that the developer preview of its SDK is now available, giving developers tools to design apps that work across multiple devices, including Android phones and non-Android platforms. Google first revealed the effort at its I/O event last May.
The goal is to simplify how developers create seamless user experiences across platforms by removing the hassle associated with device discovery, authentication, and connection protocols. The SDK relies on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi , and ultra- wideband to manage multi-device connectivity. It is also compatible with Android 8.

Google mentioned a few use cases where the tool would be useful. For example, you could use your smartphone to enter your payment method for a movie rental or purchase you make on your TV. When you switch from your phone to your tablet, you could also continue reading a long article from where you left off. These are more about personal experiences. If you're in a group, you could, for example, share a bike ride with friends you ride with.
For now, the SDK is only compatible with Android phones and tablets, but Google is committed to extending the cross-device experience to “Android surfaces and non-Android operating systems,” such as watches, TVs , and cars in the future.
