In the vast jungle of cyberspace we call the internet, there are potential threats lurking in every dark corner. There is a lot of bad content on the web – like pornography being circulated by spam bots on Instagram.

The popular social network is constantly testing new methods to filter out potentially harmful content, and even halted development of Instagram Kids after recent backlash. Now the company has shared another set of changes on its official blog, aimed at limiting the visibility of potentially harmful content.

Here is a breakdown of all the changes:
- Instagram will continue to remove content that violates its Community Guidelines, but now posts that may contain bullying or hate speech, or that may encourage violence, will appear lower in Feed and Stories.
- Instagram will downgrade potentially offensive posts in your feed based on your content reporting history.
- These changes only affect individual posts, not entire accounts. Instagram will notify violators why their posts were removed.
Instagram already has algorithms to flag harmful content, but now the company is targeting borderline posts and potential gray areas. “To understand if something might violate our rules, we’ll look at things like whether a caption is similar to a caption that previously violated our rules,” Instagram wrote in an update.

The second dot in the change log means that Instagram will try to predict posts that you are likely to mention and proactively downgrade them in your feed.
It’s also worth noting that until now, Instagram’s algorithms have attempted to hide harmful content from parts of the app that are visible to public users, such as Explore. With the aforementioned changes, these posts will be downgraded for users who follow the account that posts such content. The changes are already in effect.
