Motorola can revive its old brand «Defy» this year with a new mid‑range phone. According to recent leaks, the upcoming Motorola Defy device will feature an HD+ display, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 662 SoC, and 4 GB of RAM.

For those who are not familiar with the history, the original Motorola Defy made its debut in 2010. It was among the first Android phones that featured dust and water resistance. Given that water and dust resistance in a smartphone was hard to find at that time, the Defy series gained huge popularity. But after other OEMs adopted the feature, the Defy series lost its audience and Motorola shifted its focus to other innovations. However, a recent report from 91mobiles claims that the company will bring back the Defy brand later in the year.

The report cites a Google Play Console listing that shows an upcoming Motorola device codenamed Athena. The listing suggests that the device will feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 662 SoC, 4GB of RAM, an HD+ (720 x 1600) display, and Android 10.While the listing doesn't mention the Defy moniker, renowned leaker Ishan Agarwal has confirmed that it will launch as part of Motorola's new Defy series.

To XDA managed to confirm the news and indeed Motorola this year refreshes the Defy series. According to XDA's analysis, the first device in the new Defy series appears to be a «rebranded» Moto G9 Play. Consequently, it may feature an HD+ 6.5‑inch display, a triple‑camera setup 48MP on the back and a 5,000 mAh battery with 20W fast‑charging support. For now, it has not been confirmed whether it will have a rugged design or dust/water resistance.
