Wikileaks has released the first batch of thousands of private emails sent by senior figures in Turkey's AKP party.
The leak comes in response to the purges being carried out by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government in the country's political, military, and educational scene following last week's coup attempt.
In a statement on its website, Wikileaks said: “Today, at 11:00 PM Ankara time, WikiLeaks is releasing a portion of emails from the AKP or Justice and Development Party, which is Turkey’s ruling party and the political force behind the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.”
“It should be noted that the messages are mainly used to address the world, and not very sensitive internal issues.
“The material was obtained a week before the coup attempt. However, WikiLeaks published it in response to the government’s post-coup purges. We have verified the material and the source, and it is not linked, in any way, to the coup attempt, to an opposing political party or situation.”
Tensions remain high in Turkey, as the government has arrested tens of thousands of military, educational and other state officials.
Turkey has banned Islamic funerals for dead coup supporters and warned imams not to hold ceremonies.
