It's been a few days since the Feds announced that they had managed to hack terrorist Syed Farook's iPhone, and the FBI has agreed to help an Arkansas prosecutor unlock two Apple devices (an iPhone and an iPod) to help prosecute two teenagers accused of murder.
Faulkner County District Attorney Cody Hiland confirmed that the FBI has agreed to a request from his office to unlock the two devices. The breach of the devices has been deemed necessary as authorities face a deadlock in the case involving two teenagers, Hunter Drexler, 18, and Justin Staton, 15, who, while there is evidence, cannot be charged with murder.
The teenagers accused of killing Robert and Patricia Cogdell in their home in Conway, 30 miles north of Little Rock.
After the Feds announced on Monday that they had successfully hacked San Bernardino's iPhone, we reported that the war was not over and that one question remains:
Could the new security bypass discovered by the FBI be used in any of the 63 other cases involving Apple devices by law enforcement agencies?.
Today it seems we have the answer.
Recall that the US Department of Justice, immediately after the announcement of the breaking of the first iPhone, stated that: the method used to unlock Syed Farook's iPhone "only worked for this specific phone," an iPhone 5C with iOS 9.
There is no information at this time about the iPhone model or iOS version of the Arkansas devices, but there are certainly serious doubts about the credibility of the Department of Justice's statements.
